Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
Do you experience stress? Of course. We all do. How do you work with it? Do you know that you have powerful and, most probably untapped, inner resources for dealing with stress?
“Fighting” stress doesn’t work. Mindfulness does. Mindfulness is a way of giving yourself what no one, no substance, no activity, no distraction, no remedy or fix, can give you. Many of us live with a fundamental level of anxiety. Sometimes it escalates into panic. Often, we feel “on” all the time, edgy.
Mindfulness is the antidote. Mindfulness is compassionate, non-judgmental awareness in the present moment. Three things have a strong influence on awareness: attitude, the ability to relax, and the ability to concentrate. There is a simple and accessible way to develop these.
The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program is modeled on the renowned Stress Reduction Clinic founded thirty years ago by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. at UMass Medical Center.
MBSR is an 8-week training based in the practice of mindfulness meditation. Several different techniques are taught, all of which involve focusing attention on present moment experience and making our lives vital and worth living. People report that they gain the ability to relax, focus their attention, lower anxiety and frustration levels, improve relationships, and make conscious, health-promoting choices.
